Options are an essential part of just about any compactor installation. Compactor/Container Configuration
Whether the options are for safety issues, convenience, operation efficien-
cies or monitoring systems, waste handling equipment can be fitted with a

Container Fullness & Usage Measurement Systems

TrashMinder® is the most advanced system available for measuring and reporting con-
tainer fullness. It also controls and reports container usage. Several models are avail-
able, all with special features. Fullness TrashMinder models will send a signal to a fax,
pager or computer when containers are full. From one computer, TrashMinder can man-
age up to 4000 compactors (each with a TrashMinder monitor)! The software generates a
range of reports which display compactor status or usage information. The Usage
TrashMinder models allow control of compactor access. From a computer, accounts can
be added or deleted. On-site, users simply input an ID number or insert a Trash Pass key
to access the compactor. For a detailed description, refer to Marathon's TrashMinder
brochure.
The Full Container Light option illuminates to indicate when the container is full. The
light, which is built into the remote push button station, is activated when the unit reaches
normal shutdown pressure and the compactor automatically stops. To reactivate the com-
pactor for normal operation, it is necessary to empty the container and depress the lens
cover which deactivates the Full Container Light circuit.
The Advance Warning Light or 3/4 Full Light, automatically senses the hydraulic sys-
tem pressure. When the pressure is within 200 PSI of normal shutdown pressure, the
light, which is built into the remote push button station, illuminates and the packer contin-
ues to operate normally. To deactivate the light, the lens cover is depressed. This option
allows time for the hauling service to pick up the container and provide an empty one with-
out interfering with the user’s disposal of wastes.
Conduit is used to carry all external wiring on Marathon Compactors.
A Pressure Gauge option indicates the packer’s system pressure and enables the opera-
tor to determine when the container is approaching its “packed out” state. It can be mount-
ed adjacent to the compactor's control station or mounted on the power unit if a remote
power pack is used. It is furnished with 15' of hydraulic hose. Also available is a Dual
Needle Pressure Gauge with a adjustable needle to mark your readings.

Cycle Control Systems
The Photoelectric Cycle Control consists of a light source and a reflector. When the light
beam has been interrupted for approximately 15 seconds, it will automatically activate the
packer which will continue running until the obstruction between the light source and
reflector is cleared. The kit can be mounted on the chute, attached to the packer or on
opposite walls of the room in which the packer is installed. In the latter arrangement, two
holes, properly located to eliminate any hazard, should be provided in the chute for the
light beam. This mounting arrangement keeps the photoelectric eye and reflector cleaner
and reduces the chance of accidental mis-alignment while in use. The light source is LED
and, therefore, the beam is not visible. It will, however, penetrate dust and carry over a
longer distance than the conventional light bulb.
Automatic Shutdown is included for the Photoelectric Cycle Control, Start-up Alarm and
Container Full Light options. It prevents extended continuous packer operation due to
“blocked” photoelectric eye, thereby avoiding unnecessary wear and tear to the packer
due to heat buildup. This option package includes a timer which can be set for up to 30
minutes (for high-rise applications, 15 to 30 minutes is recommended), an illuminated
push button so that the operator knows why the unit has shut down, plus other completing
parts. To deactivate the timer, one merely depresses the illuminated push button after
clearing the blockage.
The Jog Control Station allows for manual compactor operation. It consists of a three
position key switch: Remote, OFF, and Bypass, and a three position selector switch: Ram
Extend, Off, and Ram Retract. The key switch is normally left in the “Remote” mode. In
that position, the remote push button station can be operated, but the Jog Control Station
is deactivated. When the container is to be emptied, the driver’s key is inserted and the
switch rotated to the “Bypass” mode, which permits the driver to manually control the
packer in order to clear refuse left in the charge box. If the container will be absent for a
period of time, the key switch can be rotated to “Off” position, which deactivates all con-
trols and prevents cycling the unit while the container is not present. This option is particu-
larly useful for chute fed installations where access into the building is difficult. It is mount-
ed on the charge box end of the packer (RH standard-if LH desired, it must be specified.)
The Hold To Run Button or Sustained Manual Pressure Control Button requires the com-
pactor operator to remain at the remote push button station while the compactor is in use
and may be required to meet ANSI standards in certain applications. Actuation requires
depressing the “Hold To Run” and the “Start” button is released. If the “Hold To Run” but-
ton is released, the unit will shut off.
The Multi-Cycle Timer is installed in the electrical panel box and is adjustable from 0
seconds to 17 minutes. When the “Start” button is depressed, it automatically activates
the timer. The compactor will operate for the specified time, the packer ram will automati-
cally retract and the unit will stop. Timer is preset by Marathon at 3 cycles and can be
adjusted by the user.
The Programmed Timer can be adjusted from 3 to 30 minutes to automatically start the
compactor. This option is desirable when the compactor is conveyor fed or when the
refuse is fed to the compactor at a predictable rate. The Programmed Timer includes a
three position selector switch for Automatic, OFF, and Manual modes. This option is
included with an interlocked enclosure, a container full light and start-up alarm.

Power Pack Options
The Remote Power Unit option allows the hydraulic power unit and electrical panel box
to be mounted separately from the packer. Remote Power Units are used in applications
where the packer is installed in a locations which may occasionally flood, are subject to
dust or other harsh conditions. Depending on the unit, push buttons are mounted in the
face of the electrical panel box or, if specified, as a separate assembly connected to 13'
Sealtite. Hydraulic couplings are welded in the side of the compactor. The power unit is
connected to the compactor by two 7-foot wire braided hoses. A steel Weather Cover and
NEMA 3R Electrical Panel Box is provided to protect the components. The Weather Cover
tilts back for maintenance and easy access to the hydraulic components. Marathon manu-
factures its power units with only the highest quality components.
When the compactor operates for long periods of time without shutdown, the power unit
should be equipped with an Oil Cooler.
A thermostatically controlled Oil Heater can be installed for better cold weather perform-
ance. It is installed on the oil reservoir and is equipped with a manually adjustable ther-
mostat control so that the heater is functioning only when required. It does not have to be
disconnected during the summer months. Its temperature range cannot exceed 100
degrees Fahrenheit.
The Tri-Volt Option is offered as a time saver and for convenience. With this option, it is
very easy to convert from 3-phase/208 volt to 230, to 460 and back to 208 volt. The only
additional parts needed are the overload protection device (sized to voltage and motor
size-see chart in compactor’s electrical panel box). This option consists of a tri-volt trans-
former, motor and motor starter sized large enough for any of the 3 voltages. Voltage
changes are made by rewiring the motor and the transformer and changing the overload
protection device. The Tri-Volt Option is available for all Marathon Compactors.
Odor Control Systems
The Ozone Odor Control System generates ozone, a powerful oxidizer, which breaks
down odor molecules and converts them into water vapor and other odorless, harmless
gases. In addition to eliminating all odors from the air, the ozone-rich atmosphere inhibits
germ and bacteria growth. The system requires no chemicals or fragrances and only inci-
dental, routine service. All units except those installed on Vert-I-Pack® or Mini-MAC®
Compactors require a separate 110 volt power source.
The Deodorant Spray System consists of an electrical pump with enclosure, a 5-gallon
reservoir and spray head(s). The pump operation is energized on the forward stroke of
the packer ram. The reservoir is a polyethylene container which is removable for easy
remote filling or, if installed on non-remote Horizontal Packers, the reservoir is accessible
for refilling through a hinged cover in the packer top cover.

Hoppers
Hoppers can be designed to best direct your waste into the compactor and reduce hazards. Marathon's Side Feed
and Rear Feed Hoppers are designed to meet all of ANSI and OSHA standards. See Marathon's publication:
Installation Guidelines for Stationary Compactors for an overview of the ANSI guidelines.
The 3-Sided, Side Feed Hopper is designed for loading material from ground
level by hand, forklift or with a cart dumper system. These can be configured for
left- or right-side loading.
The 3-Sided, Rear Feed Hopper can also be fitted with Hinged Access Gate
for dock loading applications. It can also be used with Treadplate Top Cover
and Hand/Toe Rails to conform to OSHA and ANSI standards. The Hinged
Access Gate along with the Access Interlock Switch is included
in the rear feed hopper assembly. In addition, a Sustained
Manual Pressure Control can be furnished with the packer.
The Access Interlock Switch is mounted on the security door
frame or access gate through which refuse is fed into the packer.
It prevents operation of the packer while the door or gate is open.
The Treadplate Top Cover is secured to the top of the packer in lieu of the
standard cover. The diamond pattern treadplate is available in either 700 lb. or
8000 lb. capacity. For the larger capacity plate, additional reinforcements are
added for support and a third pair of legs is added to the packer.
The 4-Sided, Rear Feed Hopper is for dock loading applications and eliminates
the need for an access gate, interlock switch, and the “hold to run, release to
stop” button on Marathon’s self-contained compactor/containers. Tread Plate
with hand & toe rails may be required on some compactors.
The Hinged Breaker Bar Retainer Teeth help prevent clutter in the charge box
caused by “memory” and springback of some types of material such as
corrugated cardboard. As the ram retracts, the teeth engage the material to
keep it in the container. Teeth are hinged so that material can pass beneath
them without undue stress on the breaker bar.
The Rear Feed Hopper with a Counterbalanced Lid is ideal for dock loading
applications with a lid that totally encloses the hopper opening and requires
minimum effort to open and close.
Platforms & Container Guides
The Expanded Metal Steps/Platform with Hand & Toe Rails for the VIP is
used with rear or side feed 8 yd. Vert-I-Pack® applications which conform to
ANSI and OSHA requirements. The expanded metal steps maximize traction by
allowing mud or snow to pass through the grating.
The Container Guide is constructed of two

Doghouses
Marathon's Stationary or Self-Contained Compactors equipped with a
Doghouse with Side Door are ideal for ground loading applications. This
type of hopper offers a totally enclosed charge box and a lockable door
latch for added control and security. Requires access interlock.
The door can be placed on the left, right or both sides for convenient
loading. The Doghouse Unit can be furnished “knocked down” and prime
painted, completely assembled for mounting and prime painted, or already
mounted and painted the same finish as the packer. Requires access
interlock.
A Doghouse with Rear Door shown on a Marathon RJ-250SC Roll-Off
Self-Contained, is ideal for applications where the unit is picked up at the
packer end and space limitations may prevent loading from the side.
Requires access interlock.
The Barn Door or Storm Cellar Door style Doghouse is available in side
feed, rear feed (pictured), or both, to accommodate your particular loading
needs. It can be used on the Dual Recycling Compactor (DRC II) when
two separate feed openings are required. Requires access interlock.
The Mailbox Style Doghouse is a Marathon innovation that is ideal for
apartment complexes and convenience centers. The hopper door pulls
down similar to a mailbox for loading. The compactor automatically cycles
after the hopper door has been opened and closed six times. The RJ-
250SC with Mailbox Doghouse shown is installed at an apartment complex.
The Telescoping Chute/Doghouse is another Marathon innovation that
was designed for self-contained compactors installed in an enclosed space.
The chute "telescopes" out for loading and retracts for transport to the
landfill. The RJ-250SC Self-Contained with Telescoping Chute shown is
installed at an apartment complex. The chute extends to the wall of the
enclosure. Tenants load waste through a access door on the outside of the
enclosure.

Security Chutes
Marathon offers several standard chute systems and will also construct
custom configurations to suit your installation requirements. Gravity feed
chutes must have a vertical latitude above the height of the compactor. The
hole-in-wall can range from 49" above ground level to 71". It will go as high as
81", but the effective inside height of the chute is reduced to 34" (38" for Rear
Feed Chutes) at upper end. These are based on packer being
located 36" from the wall for side feed and packer against wall for
rear feed. Laterally, the chute is adaptable to 13" either direction
off of center line provided it is no more than 58" above ground
level. Security chutes are constructed of 11 gauge hi-tensile steel.
The Security Door is furnished as a completed assembly and
consists of an outside and inside architectural trim, a steel collar
which passes through the wall and will accommodate wall
thicknesses up to 14" and a security door constructed of 3/16"
steel plate with flush latch. The latch is available with lock if
desired. The feed opening is 39" x 39". Requires access interlock.
A Side-Feed Security Chute with an optional security door works well with
Marathon’s Trash Commander and Octagon Container. This chute can be
furnished “knocked down” and all parts prime painted; the doghouse
assembled ready for mounting with the chute in two components and prime
painted; or the doghouse can be fully mounted and painted the same finish as
the compactor unit with the chute in four components (the unit can only be
loaded into rectangular compaction containers for shipping purposes). The
chute in the mounted version will only be prime painted and matching paint
will be provided.
Rear-Feed Security Chutes can be used with any of Marathon's Stationary
compactors. The Trash Commander TANK® compactors are recommended for
use with the Rear-Feed Security Chute due to their shorter-than-standard
overall length which provides the best load angle for the chute. The chute is
furnished in four components.
Rear- or Side-Feed Security Chutes can also be used with self-contained
compactors with a special break-a-way doghouse.
Cart Dumpers/Tippers
Marathon offers several Ground Level, Dock Level Cart Dumpers and
Integral models to choose from. They can be installed in any number of
configurations. The RJ-250SC Self-Contained (left-top) has a cart dumper
with 3-sided hopper. The Compactor Mounted Container Dumper for 90
gallon containers, shown on an RJ-88SC (left-middle), increases convenience
and productivity. (left-bottom) Container Dumpers can also be used with
stationary compactors.
