Mock Citizens Informational Workshop: US 74/76 Intersection Improvements, Wrightsville Beach, NC
Alternative A: Roundabout
Alternative A proposes a roundabout to replace the current stop-controlled intersection while maintaining
existing US-74 and US-76 as ‘bypass’ lanes for through traffic. The roundabout is a safe and aesthetically
appealing solution with minimum maintenance requirements. The roundabout creates a visual gateway to
the Wrightsville Beach community that maintains acceptable vehicle operations while allowing for bicycles
and pedestrians to be accommodated in the design.
Alternative B: “Candy Corn”
Alternative B proposes a set of three signalized intersections to control the US74/76 split in a ‘candy corn’
configuration. The solution maintains much of the existing roadway and creates a ‘one-way loop’ in place
of the existing intersection. All signals will have only two phases and are coordinated to assure efficient
movement of vehicles and can be timed to include pedestrian crossing movements.
