I am happy to learn that North South University (NSU) is going to organize an
“International Symposium on Eco-Bio-Social Research on Dengue Hemorrhagic
Fever in the Tropical Countries” jointly with University of Manitoba, Canada from
23-25 May, 2010 at NSU Bashundhara campus.
I have been informed that this will be an auspicious gathering of specialist doctors,
famous researchers, scholars and experts from almost ten different countries
including Switzerland, Canada, Denmark, Philippines, Thailand, India, Sri-Lanka,
Nepal and from Bangladesh. They will converge to discuss the vital issues related to
the theme of the symposium, “Generating Knowledge on Dengue through Eco-Bio-
Social Research” in the presence of representatives from government, specialist
doctors, MPH fellow (doctor) students, media, International and National NGOs. I
hope that there will be ample interaction, widespread dissemination of knowledge
and liberal exchange of enlightened ideas among the participants and also exploration
of how woman and children, who are generally more exposed, can be protected by
adoption of appropriate measures. I am confident that the valuable suggestions from
the participants will make significant contribution in addressing the issue and the
Symposium will be productive in achieving the desired end.
I wish every success of this International symposium on Dengue hemorrhagic fever at
NSU.

It is a special pleasure to participate in the launch of a project where medical scholars and
practitioners from Canada and Bangladesh can exchange ideas and work together to
improve health here and around the globe.
Dengue fever is a major public health concern in Dhaka and other major cities in
Bangladesh which have experienced a resurgence of the disease. We anticipate that this
project will contribute in important ways to knowledge about how to prevent and control
it.
This project continues a tradition of Canadian support for development cooperation and
research in Bangladesh which stretches back to the 1970s. Canada’s International
Development Research Centre (IDRC) supports initiatives like this Dengue Research
Project because it recognizes that knowledge production, knowledge sharing and
knowledge use are essential if the global community is to build a better future for the
humankind.
This partnership between Canadian and Bangladeshi researchers from the University of
Manitoba, North South University and the ICDDR,B will allow our scientists to share
experiences and to learn from each other, forging long-term and productive links between
our two countries in the health sector.
Participation of the Ministries of the Environment and of Health and Family Welfare are
also crucial to this program and particularly its sustainability.
I wish you all every success in your work over the next four years.

Message
On behalf of the University of Manitoba, Canada, I would like to welcome you all to this
international symposium on Ecohealth and eco-bio-social approaches in prevention and
control of dengue disease in Tropical Asia and other similar regions of the world. From a
public health perspective, prevention of dengue epidemic is critical, particularly to save
lives. Since dengue is a vector-borne disease, a multi- and transdisciplinary approach is
needed. In Bangladesh, dengue disease received wide attention since 2000 when a sudden
surge affected more than five thousands people. However, a clinically focused, patient
care approach has been emphasized in the public policy on this matter.
The recent trend of rapid climate change, a high growth rate of urbanization, increased air
travel and many other socio-economic processes and changes in infrastructure has
cumulatively contributed to the conditions that stimulate various vector borne diseases in
Bangladesh. Recognizing this, the University of Manitoba, Canada and the North South
University, along with the Public Health Agency of Canada (PHAC) and the International
Center Diarrhoeal Disease Research, Bangladesh, (ICDDRB) have undertaken this
initiative to conduct an integrative research to enhance knowledge of dengue disease
transmission and intervention to control dengue disease spread in Bangladesh. During the
next four days, scholars and scientists from Canada, Switzerland, India, Sri- Lanka,
Thailand, the Philippines and Bangladesh are going to meet together and discuss the
appropriate approaches, methodologies and interventions to prevent and control dengue
disease in Tropical Asian countries. The International Development Research Centre
(IDRC). Ottawa, Canada is supporting this collective effort to improve environmental
health of Bangladesh and in turn the health and well-being of the people of this country,
and we thank IDRC for this support.
I hope that you enjoy and benefit from your participation in the Symposium. Also, I wish
its success in achieving its goals and objectives.
